Look at what popped up on my property during the summer of 2017, the new Hands On Bookbinding studio! Located just two doors down from the old commercial building, this space is more modest but has been designed for better efficiency and with much better natural light. Built by local Truth or Consequences’ contractor Andy Underwood, he executed just what I had envisioned.
The formal move to the new workshop occurred after my travels to Europe in July 2017 to attend the Designer Bookbinders International exhibit, Heroic Works, at the Bodleian Library, Oxford. It had been more than 20 years since my last trip to the UK and proved to be a full circle moment having my binding of In the Garden (text created and printed by Laura Wait) accepted to the show.
I was able to see a former fellow student Charlotte Walters Cowlishaw and husband Nick from London College of Printing (1980-81), as well as my former instructor James Brockman, whose master class I attended in 1987 at the Ransom Center, University of Texas at Austin.
The downsizing of my workshop reflects plans for the downsizing of my production binding projects in 2018 (with select exceptions of a few smaller editions), enabling me to focus on my own art bindings and to offer smaller, periodic instructional workshops.
